Some of you might know that Cats the Musical is actually based on a book of poems. ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ is a collection of poems by T.S.Eliot. Each poem centres around the psychology and sociology of our friendly felines.

Cats the Musical is the ear tickling adaptation of this book that is the longest running in West End and Broadway history. Cats first debuted back in 1981 at New London Theatre and since then have performed there for 21 years. That is about 9,000 performances just in that theatre.

However, this is not the first time that Cats has performed on our Malaysian stage. The recent show in Malaysia was also held at Istana Budaya in 2002.

A Truly Entertaining Performance

The musical is set up against the background of a junkyard playground where all the cats roam and play. Act I is titled ‘When cats are maddened by the midnight dance’ and begins with an introduction of the cats and the Jellicle tribe.

Meanwhile, act II is ‘Why will the summer day delay – when will time flow away?’ which picks up from the end of act I. We aren’t going to give too much information away because it is so much better to just go and watch.

Here is an interesting fact for you. Each actor receives a custom made wig that is suited for their exact head shape and size. This is to make sure that the wig fits properly so that when they jump and run it will stay put.

Because of this, the broadway production has used about 1,300kg of yak hair for the wigs. That is heavier than the average weight of a full size yak. Wow!

Cats will also be performing in China, Manila, and Singapore before heading over to Malaysia. You can buy your tickets here.
