We are often envious of those who have lustrous and beautiful tresses. However, we do not notice the effort the hairdresser has poured in behind the scenes. A good hairdresser would help you maintain the shine and thick hair. Even so, an amazing hairdresser will educate you on the hairstyles that would suit your facial features and ensure you have a healthy scalp! If you aspire to be a passionate hairstylist, A Cut Above Academy will help you to achieve your dreams.

The Apprenticeship Program

They have created an apprentice program where the students can learn and earn progressively. The students have a choice to learn:

  1. Foundation in Hairdressing

Learn the foundation in hairdressing (which is to wash and blow dry a client’s hair) for 3 months. After the 3 months, the apprentice can decide to either stay and continue working in that salon, or return back to the Academy to continue his/her studies.

  1. Hair cutting

In the next 3 months, the Apprentice will be trained solely on cutting hair. By the time he finishes his 3 months stint, he is able to wash, cut and blow dry a client’s hair. Again, after the 3 months, the Apprenticeship can decide to either stay and continue working in that salon, or return back to the Academy to continue his/her studies.

  1. Hair Coloring and Perming

In the next 3 months, the Apprentice will be trained solely on hair colouring and perming. By the time he finishes his 3 months stint, he would be a graduate hairstylist, equivalent to the students who had undergone the 12 months program.

This whole process takes the student only 18 months to complete. If this student were to start his courses at the age of 16 (when others are in form 4,) he would have completed his course at the age of 17+ and working with a comfortable income (for his age).

The Birth and Rise of The Academy

The academy was born with the intention of improving the present standard of Hairdressers. To accomplish that vision, the Academy worked on building the foundation of all its students. Hence, they ensure that graduates from A Cut Above Academy is skillful and knowledgeable in the science and principles involved in hairdressing. Although it is never too late to learn hairdressing, the most important criteria would be their willingness to learn, communication and ability to work as a team.

Developing Talents For the Community

Datin Winnie Loo, Founder and Chief Creative Director once said; “We have been taking talents from the Industry for far too long, it is about time, we provide talents back to the Industry.” Ultimately, they want to continue to improve their training syllabus and quality of teaching. In the long run, they aim to include management studies, photography, make-up and fashion designing into the syllabus. Additionally, they strive to change the perception of the public towards hairdressing as a career.
