Previously, we took you on a tour of Singapore’s speakeasy bars. Today we’re doing the same, only with speakeasy bars in KL & Selangor. If you wish to experience some 1920s-esque fun, check out these 10 speakeasy bars that are right here in Malaysia.
1) PS150
An A for authenticity is needed, as this bar is located right in Chinatown, in a pre-war shop that could very well be right out of the 1920s. Once you’ve discovered the way in, you can marvel at the list of cocktails they’ve got, which takes inspiration from Southeast Asian flavours. They are open every day except Mondays, and getting in on Fridays, Saturdays and Public Holiday requires you to “dress to impress”.

2) The Attic
Not too far away on Jalan Balai Polis is The Attic, where you can treat yourself to an array of classic alcoholic beverages or show off your wild side by trying out one of their many signature cocktails, some with a local twist. Oh, and if you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you may just like their cocktails inspired by characters on the show. This bar also serves up some food, so you’ll be covered if you get a case of the munchies.

3) Hyde at 53m
Hyde at 53m is open all week except for Mondays, and you can get your happy hour started with them from 5pm. You can toast to the end of the work day with craft beers, wines and classic spirits, or try their concoctions in cocktail form. Artisanal cocktails are very much the rage here, so ask one of the staff for a recommendation if that’s up your alley. Find them at Damansara Utama.

4) 61 Monarchy
If you desperately need a pick-me-up on a Monday night, 61 Monarchy has got your back. They close only on Sundays. This bar specializes in whiskies, with a selection of over 400 bottles from all around the world. If that’s not your jam, they also have other spirits, wines, and whisky-based cocktails. They’re under the same company as Hyde, and are also located in Damansara Utama.

5) IKKI
IKKI is located within TREC, a relatively new KL hotspot for party-goers and food lovers alike. At IKKI you’ll get to indulge in both good food and drinks, with exclusively crafted cocktails and artisanal whiskey, paired with bar bites with an Asian twist. This elegant bar also has a stunning view of KL city, making it the perfect place to kick back and relax as you watch the world pass you by.
6) The Locker & Loft
The name will make sense as soon as you ascend the staircase that leads to the bar, and see a wall of lockers. Part of the fun is figuring out how to get into the Loft in question – and we won’t spoil it by revealing how it’s done. Inside, you’ll be surprised with the sheer sophistication of the bar, even with minimal space. They’ve got an interesting list of cocktails, using a quirky mix of local ingredients and international spirits. If you’re hungry, there is also a selection of meals.

7) Private Room

Once you do, you will have successfully found a new hangout that’s intimate and private, a far cry from the hustle and bustle of many other establishments. There are also bar bites to satiate hungry tummies.

8) Mr Brooks
Another endeavour by the famed BIG Group is Mr Brooks, which is located in Bangsar Shopping Centre. This one is styled as a “gentleman’s den”, where gin and cocktails are paired with cigars and snacks. The ladies shouldn’t feel left out, they can always kick off their heels and sip a cocktail or two here as well. Mr Brooks is closed on Sundays.

9) Omakase + Appreciate
As you may have guessed, this establishment has a Japanese influence. This is blended with a Western aesthetic too, so this should please those who enjoy fusion concepts. And for a little bit more twists and turns along the way, enjoy chomping on a hot dog with your cocktail. It’s unusual, yet fun all the same. They are located on Jalan Ampang.
10) The Vault
If you like a little “refined debauchery”, then wander over to The Vault. First rule, leave your slippers behind. Yes, in true retro style, one is expected to dress up (Smart Casual in this case) to get in the door. Their menu is exclusively created with a combination of specialty cocktails and classic beverages. The atmosphere is decidedly relaxed, with the sweet sound of music wafting through the air.
