Robert Downey Jr. is most famously known for his role as Tony Stark in the Marvel Universe. A brilliant scientist who solves all his problems with technology. Now it seems like reality is imitating art as Robert Downey Jr. has announced that he will be cleaning up Earth with the help of technology.
He was present at Amazon’s new Machine Learning, Automation, Robotics and Space tech conference recently held in Las Vegas. He delivered his speech in a room full of astronauts, artificial-intelligence leaders, and others.
Throughout his talk, he successfully managed to incorporate elements of the Marvel Universe, Iron Man’s suits, and his past with drug abuse. In addition, he also talked about the history of artificial intelligence and leaders of the field.
It was at the end of his talk that he announced his plans to launch a new initiative he named as Footprint Coalition. To add, the purpose of his new project is to utilise robotics, artificial intelligence, and technology.
It will be used to clean up Earth and attempt to reverse the carbon footprint. And he hopes to achieve all this within a decade.
During his speech he said “I know it’s a kumbaya-type dream. I’m down with dedicating myself to maybe one small part of making good on that statement. Even in abject failure, it’s still the best idea I’ve ever had.”
Footprint Coalition should be officially up and running by April 2020. Also, Downey is planning to spend the next 11 years on it. He joked “I’ve got to do something – I’m unemployed” which references his characters ending in Avengers: Endgame.
This move from Downey comes at a very crucial time in history where Earth is suffering more than before. Even the term ‘climate change’ has been changed to ‘climate crisis’ to show the urgency of the problem.
Oceans are filled with plastic, toxic gases are poisoning our air and water, and the ice is melting at alarming rates.
It would be amazing if Downey could successfully do this and even better if it inspires more people to work for a change.
