Beyond the food court and durian stalls, the popular SS2 neighbourhood is a haven for cafe hoppers. You can find plenty of them mushrooming around the area no matter if you are looking to enjoy coffee or others like wholesome entrees and desserts. So, below is the selected list of 7 cafes you can explore in SS2, PJ.

1) Extraction

The minimalist cosiness of this five-year-old cafe isn’t only the thing that’s inviting here. The predominantly white decor with wooden accents and all that gives Extraction a touch of modernity. Their coffee is a real deal: They use imported beans for their caffeinated beverages, offering the brewing goodness of espresso, long black, Piccolo Latte and more. They made their own sourdough too and incorporated them in various hearty dishes, namely The Big Breakfast and even the Classic Kaya Butter Toast combo.

Address: 11, Jalan SS 2/75, SS 2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

2) Kooky Cream

If the name of the cafe sounds like a dessert, that’s because it is. Indulge in some of their tempting treats — cakes, and cookies, they have them right here, all handmade and baked fresh on a daily basis. Some of their bestsellers include the Korean Strawberry Shortcake and Rose Strawberry. The latter is a heavenly-sent rose-infused sponge cake with fresh cream, strawberries, lychees and rambutan. Best paired with one of their house-blend or single-origin brewed coffees or have a sip of their Kyoto Matcha.

Address: Lot A-G-02, The Hub SS2 19 Sentral, Jalan Harapan, Seksyen 19, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

3) Niju Coffee Hub

Enjoy a cuppa or two at the calming Niju Coffee Hub. Try their signature espresso-based house blend, where they use imported beans from the likes of El Salvador and Colombia. Or sip at one of their subtle and fruity filter coffee. Feeling hungry? Satisfy your craving with their can’t-miss Buttermilk Fried Chicken. Sandwiched between the brioche burger bun, you’ll have a crunchy fried chicken thigh and other savoury ingredients like cheddar and caramelised onions.

Address: No 20, Mezzanine Floor, Jalan SS 2/61, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

4) Half & Hāfu

Snip and sip, anyone? Well, that’s what Half & Hāfu has to offer here. Their space is part hair salon and part cafe. But let’s talk about the latter. The cafe’s earthy aesthetics make you feel like you are in an oasis of serenity. In other words, it’s good for a chill-out session with your friend(s), your loved one or even a me-time moment. Go classic with one of their coffees or order their speciality drink such as the namesake beverage. You can have it hot or cold — an interesting blend of espresso, chocolate, milk and dry bitter orange. And if you need some light bites, there’s a Matcha Toast served with homemade matcha spread.

5) Flakes

Here’s a laidback cafe where you can sit indoors (they have seating downstairs and upstairs) or outdoors. Flakes lives up to its name for — guess what — flaky croissants. And yes, they baked them fresh using French butter and flour. Their plain one is good enough or go for the filling — almond, matcha and pistachio, just to name a few. Hungry? Try one of their bestsellers such as the Squid Ink Salted Egg with Soft Shell Crab pasta. Remember to leave some room for a dessert — a slice of Dark Chocolate or Lemon Pound cake, if you will.

Address: B-G-06, The Hub SS2, 19 Sentral, Jalan Harapan, Seksyen 19, 46300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

6) ONO Specialty Coffee & Matcha

The clutter-free white space screams minimalist at ONO Specialty Coffee & Matcha. As the name suggests, their speciality lies in the best of both worlds — coffee and matcha. You may want to try their special filter coffee called ‘The Champion’s Reserve’. Or sip at one of their ceremonial matcha served in tea or latte style. Prefer to have it both ways? And by both, we mean coffee and matcha together and this is made possible with the appropriately named ‘When Two Worlds Collide’. It was a signature drink served chilled combining ceremonial matcha cream and carbonated Ethiopian coffee cold brew. For bites, opt for one of their Japanese-inspired sandos.

Address: 47, Jalan SS 2/30, SS2, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

7) Annie Day Coffee

Nice play on words here with Annie Day Coffee. Any day is a good time for coffee as they serve them from 9 am onwards. For instance, try one of their Italian coffees such as Honey Lemon Americano, Oatmilk Latte or Caramel Macchiato. They brew them using Robusta and Arabica beans from Brazil and you can enjoy your coffee hot or cold. In case you are hungry, they have comfort-food options like the House Signature Mama Mee and others like nasi lemak, noodles and sourdough toasts.
