Shopping Malls in China Now Offer Boyfriends for Hire

Previously only occurring during Chinese New Year to avoid unnecessary questions from nosy relatives, the boyfriend-for-hire phenomenon is now becoming a permanent fixture! In China, shopping malls are offering “boyfriends for hire”, much like how you would rent a stroller.

What does the hired boyfriend do?

Why, keep you company, of course! The “boyfriend” will hold your bags, chat with you, take selfies with you, and go shopping with you. If you’re the indecisive type, you can even ask his opinions when you’re trying to buy something. However, physical contact is strictly not allowed; it’s part of the rules and regulations.

How much does a hired boyfriend cost?

According to signs in a Hebei shopping mall, you can rent a boyfriend for one yuan (RM 0.60) for half an hour. Alternatively, you can also scan a QR code to pay for this service. In China, mobile pay is rapidly taking over, and Chinese citizens are already paying for a lot of services online. The boyfriend-for-hire service is just one of the more recent additions, and it’s taking China by storm.

Can I pick my “boyfriend”?

He’s going to be your “boyfriend”, so yes. The men, like mannequins, stand inside glass boxes, and the ladies can take their pick. At one point in said Hebei shopping mall, there were six men on display. It is unclear if the mall plans to expand their community of “boyfriends” though, especially since they seem to be a hit.
