Hey guys! What do you usually do in Penang? Enjoy some laksa, char koay teow, visit Kek Lok Si and Penang Hill? Perhaps drop by the murals to take some photos, and that’s about it? Well, now you have one more option, and it’s free! Welcome to the Chew Thean Yeang Aquatic & Pet, a free aquarium in Penang!

The Underwater World

As you know, the school holidays have officially started. If you’re struggling to find a place to visit, this could be a good place, especially to have a first experience with the underwater world. Stacked fish tanks will greet you as you walk in, some with deep sea fishes, and some depicting the underwater world. With “pet” in its name, we assume you can buy some of those fishes home to rear, so why not ask a staff member, especially if you have interest in fishes?

Cat Garden

Alright, so it may not be your typical aquarium. For cat lovers, you’re in luck, for there’s a whole space dedicated to felines. The place is literally a cat playground for the cats to climb all over, or to just take a snooze on high ground. The cats there are really well taken care of, plump and silky smooth. However, if you want a close-up tactile experience with the kitties, you’d have to pay a fee of RM3. This fee goes to the upkeep of the cats and their surroundings, so it’s a perfectly reasonable price to pay. Besides cats, they also have dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs – all perfectly safe for interaction! Looking for some other exotic animals? They also have lizards (iguanas?)and snakes among other reptiles.

For Your Pets

For those who actually have furry or scaly friends (fishes) at home, you could also pick up some food and supplies right here. Other than that, they also provide decorative items such as wooden blocks or coral structures, so you can spice up your fish tank, or maybe do some very mild landscaping with them. And also, we’re not done with the animals yet, for you’ll also be encountering some birds, hamsters, dogs, and insects, which we also assume can be purchased. Last but not least, chill and feel zen at the koi pond there – looking at the beautiful koi could instantly bring calm to you.

Do Some Good!

Right at the exit, a donation box in the form of a dog is for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), where it also reminds you to be kind to animals, and to be responsible to your pets. As we try to help animals, we shall not forget our fellow human beings as well. Next to the dog sculpture, there’s another donation box (this one does actually look like a box) that’s collecting for underprivileged people who require medical attention – regardless of race.
