We trust that you’ve seen a video of an Asian guy reacting to BBC Food attempting to teach you how to make egg fried rice. But if you haven’t, not to worry; we’ll include it for you below. So we won’t spoil the video for those who are just getting to know about this, but this video went viral thanks to the method of cooking rice depicted, as well as the reactions of one Uncle Roger, who’s a character of Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng. Here’s what we know of Nigel Ng so far!
He’s A Stand-Up Comedian
Nigel is Malaysian, but he’s now based in the UK. He first started doing comedy when he was in university in the US, and thought it was a fun thing to do. Afterwards, he moved to the UK for work, and continued to pursue comedy. The rest is history, as he’s now a full-time comedian!
His Live Shows Are Popular
His show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019 Culture Shocked was sold out, and it was for that show that he was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award. On the heels of that success, he achieved another sold out week-long run at London’s Soho Theatre early this year. Needless to say, live shows are now on hold, but Nigel also does Zoom shows now, and you can check out how to get tickets here.
He Has Appeared On TV
He made his TV debut in 2018 on Comedy Central’s Stand Up Central, followed by Roast Battle. Since then, he has made other TV appearances in 2019 as well.
He Has A YouTube Channel
Apart from doing live shows, he also creates content for YouTube and Instagram. It was this particular YouTube video (shown below) that propelled Nigel to worldwide fame, as he reacts to BBC Food attempting an egg fried rice tutorial as his created character Uncle Roger. His reactions were not only funny, but delivered endearingly and familiarly with Asian mannerisms. If you haven’t watched it yet, please commence immediately. If you have watched it, watch it again because it’s just so highly entertaining! Thanks to this video, memes were born, and at least another YouTuber has reacted to this as well. He Has A Podcast
His podcast is named Rice to Meet You, which is a comedy podcast about Asian culture. It’s hosted by him and fellow comedian Evelyn Mok, and it happens twice a week. On Tuesdays, they do stories and general banter, whereas on Thursdays, they do interviews with other guests. You can listen to it on Apple Podcasts, or Spotify!
