They Called Her A Disgrace But This Doctor Has A Heart Of Gold

Dr Nur Amalina Bakri has been through many challenges in her life. She has also accomplished many achievements that we Malaysians should be proud. And now she is extending her help with baby Ainul Mardhiah to receive treatment for her rare type of cancer.

Dr Nur Amalina Bakri

Dr Amalina is originally from Kelantan and was raised in Johor. She held the record of most 1As scored during her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in 2014. Dr Amalina achieved 17 1As which set the record for the number of 1As achieved by any student in the history of Malaysian education.

After such an achievement, she received many many scholarships to further her study. She went to the UK and graduated from the University of Edinburgh as a doctor. The university has also awarded her an intercalated degree in Pharmacology. She is currently a general surgeon but is training in specialising.

Unfortunately, Dr Amalina has also faced some backlash from the Malaysian public. Most of is due to her decision to remove her hijab. Some of them called her a disgrace and many questioned her choice. We should learn to respect each other’s choices especially with something as personal as religion.

Baby Ainul Mardhiah Ahmad Safiuddin

But now the narrative is taking a turn after she reached out to baby Ainul’s family. Eight month old Ainul Mardhiah Ahmad Safiuddin is currently facing a condition called “Germ Cell Tumour” in her mouth. This is a rare type of cancer.

Dr Amalina posted on her Instagram account stating that “My decision to become a doctor was largely driven by my desire to help others… I’m currently in touch with Ainul’s mother and I have received her medical records. I’ve contacted a few of my colleagues, but because it is a very complex case, we need to do a multidisciplinary meeting (between different specialties) to discuss about her case. To Ainul’s parents, please stay strong. In the meantime, let’s all pray for Baby Ainul.” You can read her post here

And now many Malaysians are applauding Dr Amalina for her kindness. Some are saying she has a heart of gold while some are calling out the haters and wondering what the “holier than thou” community has to say now.

To add to the good news, the Malaka Government has announced that they will be taking on the financial costs of flying the family and baby Ainul to the UK to meet Dr Amalina. We hope that everything will be in her favour and that she receives amazing treatment. Shout out to Dr Amalina for being bigger than the haters and just being her true kindhearted self.
