No More Straws In Selangor Starting From 1st July

The Selangor state government has announced that it will be banning the use of plastic straws. All eateries in Selangor must stop providing plastic straws by the 1st of July.

Banning the use of straws is part of a plan on eliminating single-use plastics that can pollute the ocean and harm marine life. All eateries involved in the ban include restaurants, neighbourhood coffeeshops, and even your favourite mamak.

Plastic straws must also not be put out on the tables for customers to help themselves to. However, only when a request is put in then the eatery may give the customer a plastic straw. State Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian is hoping to change people’s habits.

By forcing customers to take that extra step, he hopes that they will pause to think about the consequences. However, Anfaal Saari, Selayang Municipal Council councillor mentioned that many restaurants are phasing out plastic straws on their own initiative.

The ban on plastic straws will be fully enforced nationwide by next year. So make sure to look for alternatives. Many include metal straws, bamboo straws, glass straws, and silicone straws. It’s important for us to take care of our environment and the ecosystem. And a simple step such as bringing your own straw can bring many positive impacts.
