Now that SPM is over some of you are probably wondering what to do with your time. Maybe you want to travel and maybe you want to work. But why not both? New Zealand is a beautiful country to visit but also rather expensive. Which is why applying for a working holiday visa is the perfect solution because you can work AND travel!
Time to get ready because the New Zealand government will be opening applications for a working holiday visa soon. Keep your eyes on the New Zealand immigration page as applications will open on the 23rd of January at 5AM Malaysian time (10AM New Zealand time).
However, before you start getting excited about applying here are some of the things that you should know. Firstly, you will only be able to stay in New Zealand for 6 months in total.
While you may be able to fly to New Zealand within 12 months of receiving your visa, you will be able to work, study, or train for just 6 months. During this 6 months period you will be able to fly in and out as many times as you like.
Moreover, applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old in order to apply. This visa is also a once in a lifetime one so make sure to make it count.
Next, you must be able to show that you are able to fund the entire trip. This can be through showing that you have flight tickets to enter and leave or proving that you have enough funds to support yourself.
You must also have enough funds to be able to buy your flight tickets. The website quotes NZ$ 2,250 or RM6,087 as the minimum to prove that you can sustain your travel.
After applying, it usually takes up to 20 working days to receive word on your application. You will receive an email that approves your visa or that asks you for more information. You may also be asked to prove that you are healthy with an x-ray or checkup.
Moving on, you are not required to already have a job waiting for you in order to apply for the working holiday visa. In fact, if you enter New Zealand and decide not to work, that’s fine as well.
However, you can have more than one job to supplement your income while in New Zealand. Just make sure you fulfil the job requirements as well. Firstly, you are not allowed to have a permanent job and it must be legal work. Next, you cannot provide commercial sexual services or run a business that provides commercial sexual services.
