Every Chinese New Year many of us rush out to the front of our houses when we hear the signature drums. We are even treated to a show in shopping malls during this festive period. This December, the lions will battle it out at the 19th National Lion Dance Championship.
It’s not a secret that lion dancing is a challenging sports that requires strength, skills, and great balance.
The National Lion Dance Championship accepts only the finest teams to compete against each other. Performances include the usage of tall stilts that the lions leap through with amazing grace.
This year will be the 19th edition of the National Lion Dance Championship held in Genting. It will be held on the 7th and 8th of December at the Arena of Stars which has been the long-time host.
Moving on, we will see the best troops compete not only for a place next year, but also a cash prize. The winner will receive a grand prize of RM18,000 but first they must prove themselves.
Each team must display and demonstrate not just their skills but also their endurance and creativity. Plenty of acrobatic stunts will be seen which will leave the audience gasping at the danger!

As you can see, it’s not just about the stunts and the ability to jump from stilt to stilt without falling. The team also captivates the audience through the subtle movements of the lion. It’s through the way the lion looks out at the audience while blinking and moving its behind in anticipation.
The Muar team have been defending their title as champions for the past 12 years and will be back again. However, will they emerge victorious once again or will another team snatch the first place?
