For a long time, females have been the ones taking pills for birth control. Now, with the birth of DMAU, males may soon be able to take pills as a birth control method too!

What is DMAU?

DMAU, or dimethandrolone undecanoate, is an experimental androgen/anabolic steroid (AAS) and progestogen which has been developed as a potential birth control pill for men. By taking it once daily, DMAU affects hormones and results in reversible suppression of sperm production. To be effective, DMAU must be taken with food. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (USA) developed and is funding the study of DMAU.

The Study of DMAU

DMAU was first mentioned in 2002, and there has been a lot of research on it to be a male birth control pill. However, it wasn’t until a recent study by researchers from the University of Washington that it appears to be both effective and safe. Prior to this, progress had been slow due to health concerns. The researchers studied 83 men between 18-50 years, and found that their testosterone levels dropped significantly. Not only that; the levels of two other hormones essential for sperm production dropped as well! Liver and kidney damage concerns were put to rest, and the ingestion of DMAU does not harm one’s sex drive either.

Has it been made available yet?

Hold your horses, guys. The study conducted recently was on a small scale, and before the pills come rolling out, more research needs to be done. Ultimately, studies need to be done on couples to ensure its reliability. However, DMAU does sound promising as a temporary birth control method, so one can hope that it will be made available soon!

What do you think of this? Would you try this method of birth control once it’s available? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
