Fashion trends come and go but style, particularly the essential ones, prevails. Sure, you can have all the latest trendy clothes. But you just can’t ignore the essentials. After all, they are timeless and immune to any fashion season all-year round. Here is the list of clothes every man should have in his wardrobe.

1) Plain Crew Neck T-Shirts

We’re not talking about those T-shirts with fancy graphics or bold statements. But rather the good old plain crew neck T-shirts. They come in many colours like white, black, blue and green. They are even versatile enough to wear it on its own or pair with your favourite jacket or coat.

2) Polo Shirts

Like a plain crew neck T-shirt, polo shirts are just as versatile. Except, of course, these types of shirts belong to a more smart look, especially given their mix of collar and button styles.

3) Oxford Shirts

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the fact that the shirt is made from Oxford. It is actually named as such after one of the four famous universities (the other three are Cambridge, Yale and Harvard). Oxford shirts can be worn for work or after-work sessions like going out on a date or drinking with your buddies in a pub. You can simply pair with your favourite pants or jeans. If possible, go for the slim-fit while white and light blue are the two must-have colours for their versatilities.

4) Bomber Jackets

A bomber jacket is an essential outerwear, where you can pair it with your shirt like T-shirt, polo tee or even a sweater. It’s stylish, has a nice laid-back look and definitely a must-have in any man’s wardrobe.

5) Undershirts

An undershirt is particularly essential if you wear a dress shirt. More so if you are prone to sweaty armpits. Choose undershirts which are both lightweight, well-fitted and breathable. And of course, make sure they also help to absorb perspiration.

6) Blazers/Suits

Blazers and suits aren’t just reserved for the corporate world. It doesn’t matter whether you work in an ad agency or as a freelancer where you wear casual all the time. At least invest one of them because you never know you might need them someday. Case in point: wedding and formal event/function. It doesn’t have to be expensive as well, so long it fits your body right and well-tailored.

7) Good Pairs Of Jeans

Invest a few good pairs of jeans. You are going to need them because good jeans will last you for many years. Go for the jeans (straight-cut and slim-fit are typically your best options) that fit well and flatter your body shape, not the other way around. Look around and take your time to try them on until you find the right fit.

Given our tropical climate in Malaysia, shorts are certainly a must-have essential for every man. They are particularly versatile for both casual and smart-casual looks. If possible, go for the timeless flat-front style. While khaki is always the safest choice, don’t be afraid to embrace other colours as well.
