7 Quick Facts to Know About TMJ

We’re not sure if you’ve noticed, but there’s currently an argument between the PM and Johor Royalty, namely TMJ. As with most issues, it was sparked off by a series of tweets, nothing less. But we’re not here to unfold the argument further, nor to criticise social media. Rather, this is an article about a few things to know about TMJ, since PM Tun M is pretty well-known already!


1) TMJ is Both His Title and Nickname

TMJ actually stands for Tunku Mahkota Johor, or Crown Prince of Johor. This year, TMJ is 34 years old, and he was proclaimed as TMJ on 28th January 2010. Being bestowed this title means that he is heir apparent and the first in line to the throne of Johor.

2) What Uni?

Just like his father before him, TMJ has no tertiary (academic) qualification. Instead, he enrolled in a military academy, but more on that next. Academically, he completed his higher secondary studies at Hale School, Perth.

3) TMJ is a Member of the Indian Armed Forces

Incidentally, he is also the first ever Malaysia royal to join them. Both his father and late grandfather were in armies, so you could say military runs in his blood. Back in 2003, his enrolled as a cadet officer in the Indian Military Academy, and since then he has been promoted to lieutenant and then captain. Also, he is the first foreigner to lead a unit of Indian Army in the Indian Republic Day Parade!

4) TMJ is a Skilled Equestrian

Did you know? When he was an IMA cadet, he won the Best in Riding award between 2003 and 2004. Besides that, he is also a polo enthusiast, having played polo for his regiment and picking up several trophies along the way.

5) Did Someone Say Football?

Not only does he play polo, but he is also clearly a football fan! Why? He’s the president of the Johor FC!

6) Vroom Vroom

TMJ has a wide range of interests, and just like most men, he loves sports cars. All of his cars are registered under the same license plate – you guessed it – “TMJ”! There’s no better way to mark your property!

7) TMJ is a Dad

On 24th October 2014, he married Che’ Puan Khaleeda Bustamam in a private ceremony. Now, the couple are parents to two children, a girl and a boy, both of whom are still toddlers this year.
