6 Places To Enjoy Gula Apong Ice Creams in Klang Valley

The good thing about ice cream is that they come in different flavours. And if you are looking to try something different for a change, there’s the gula apong ice cream (even though it has been around for quite some time). Gula apong, of course, refers to Sarawak’s nipa palm sugar from the nipa palm tree. These trees are usually grown abundantly in the coastal areas of Sarawak. While you can easily get gula apong ice cream in Sarawak, we have them available here as well. Typically served with toppings and a drizzle of gula apong syrup, here are 6 Places To Enjoy Gula Apong Ice Creams in Klang Valley.

1) Oh Apong

Here’s a family-run dessert cafe specialising in gula apong ice cream, which made its debut in May 2021. Located deep within Kota Damansara (Emporis, to be exact), I first discovered the existence of this place when I stumbled upon a blogger’s post that I follow on Instagram. Always curious how gula apong ice cream actually tastes like, I visited Oh Apong earlier this month. Their menu is pretty limited when it comes to their ice cream selection. But then again, what matters the most is whether Oh Apong’s gula apong ice cream lives up to its expectation (well, at least judging by the crowd when I went there).

I ended up trying their Signature Apong Soft Serve, where they offer a cone or two cup sizes to choose from. It consists of gula apong soft serve topped with multi-grain cereal and a drizzle of gula apong sauce. It looks fairly simple but I do enjoy the refreshing taste of their gula apong soft-serve — smooth, mild and not overly sweet. Think of it as a mellower version of Gula Melaka and you’ll get the idea. The added cereal, in the meantime, gives it a nice crunch and complements the gula apong soft serve well. Certainly worth trying!

2) M Ice Cream

Famous for its gula apong ice cream, M Ice Cream has a few outlets in Peninsular Malaysia. This includes Klang Valley (I managed to come across one of their outlets in Spectrum Mall in Bandar Baru Ampang) and other states such as Melaka and Johor. You can opt for their classic gula apong ice cream, where it comes with two free toppings (e.g. cornflakes, coco crunch, chocolate rice). If you want to take it to the next level, top your gula apong ice cream with a block of honeycomb for a fraction of the price. They even offer 2-in-1 flavours that combine either gula apong with chocolate (Chocolate Apong Mix) or red velvet (Red Velvet Apong Mix).

Address: Spectrum Shopping Mall, AW-11, Ampang Walk, Jalan Wawasan 4/5, Bandar Baru Ampang, 68000 Ampang Jaya, Selangor.

3) Q Ice Cream Gula Apong

For those who live in Gombak or happen to pass by the neighbourhood, there’s Q Ice Cream that serves gula apong soft serve. Their menu consists of original gula apong soft serve, offering up to 4 different cup sizes (Small to Special). They come with free toppings of your choice (e.g. Nestum, cornflakes, chocolate rice) and you can add on a honeycomb. Not restricting to merely gula apong, Q Ice Cream also incorporates other flavours like Pandan Apong and Mango Apong. Just so you know, Q Ice Cream Gula Apong is originally from Bintulu, Sarawak.

4) DP Ice Cream Gula Apong

Originated from Kuching, DP Ice Cream Gula Apong made its mark in KL or more specifically, Kampung Baru in 2017. A favourite among many locals looking for an authentic gula apong ice cream, you can have it served in a cone or a cup. The latter comes in a small or large cup. Just like what you would expect from a shop selling gula apong ice cream, they have various toppings available such as Nestum and cornflakes.

Address: 57B-4, Jalan Daud, Kampung Baru, 50300 Kuala Lumpur.

5) Mokti’s

Mokti’s has come a long way selling gula apong ice cream — well, believe it or not — from a car boot. Today, the brand has opened several outlets in Peninsular Malaysia including a few of them in Klang Valley online. They basically have three types to choose from — Apong Asli, Apong Baby Bob and Apong Honeycomb. If you are wondering about “Apong Baby Bob”, it is actually gula apong ice cream with boba pearls, cornflakes and gula apong drizzle. Interestingly enough, they even came up with a popsicle version, offering flavours from the original Gula Apong to Matcha Apong and Pandan Apong. And if you prefer to bring home a tub, Mokti’s got them all covered too.

6) Ludwig

Rounding up our topic about places you can enjoy gula apong ice cream is Ludwig a.k.a. Ludwig Softserve. Hailing all the way from Penang, they have an outlet here in Sunway Pyramid. Their gula apong soft-serve happens to be one of the must-try flavours available here. You can have it served in a cone, cup (with/without toppings) or waffles. For the latter, expect freshly baked waffles with a scoop of soft serve on top (their signature Pandan Coconut Gula Apong comes highly recommended).

Address: LG2.08A, Lower Ground Two, Sunway Pyramid, No. 3, Jalan PJS 11/15, 47500, Selangor.
