Congratulations! You have found a significant other and have been hit by the realisation that this special person is someone you would want to spend the rest of your life with. However, you may be paralysed with anxiety and nerves to ask for their hand in marriage. After all, you want it to be memorable and with 100% confidence that she will say ‘Yes!’. If you are having doubts, here are some tips to make your proposal as fail-proof as possible:

1) Win Over Her Family First

Get blessings from your future in-laws prior to the proposal. Asking a man for his daughter’s hand will show a level of class and initiative that sets a positive tone for your entire marriage. It rings even more so in the Asian culture, where seeking approval from her parents before popping the question is a sign of respect. Additionally, if your girlfriend is from a traditional family and a very family-oriented person, the gesture would still be greatly appreciated. Either way, it will score you huge brownie points!

2) Rock The Ring

Choose the right ring – this is easier said than done. If you prefer to keep the element of surprise, you can either ‘casually’ investigate the engagement ring design your girlfriend likes at a store or she may have hinted a design she liked before (guys, stop playing games and take note). The safe, alternative route is to ask her to pick a ring she likes. No surprises there, but at least she will love it and the ring will fit!

3) If You Fail To Plan, You Plan To Fail

Planning is key! When it comes to making the ultimate declaration to your lady, it pays to keep in mind the type of person she is. Shy? Probably best to steer clear from big, public scenes. Scared of the heights? Proposing at the peak of a mountain may not be wise. If in doubt, keep it simple by taking her to the place where you first met or where you went on your first date. Do your homework!

4) Timing Is Everything

You have planned this big, romantic proposal and you’re excited (or nervous). We get it. However, proposing to your beloved on the same day that her dog died or if she is down with food poisoning will not be the route to a happy ending. If in doubt, wait. There will be a better time.

5) Pop The Question

Exhale. Take a deep breath in and utter the simple ‘Will you marry me?’. On bended knee is often the best way to go, but if you’re feeling nervous it can be easier to say it in writing. Why not write your proposal in a poem, in a fortune cookie, in sand on the beach, in rose petals on your kitchen table or in icing on her dessert plate. GOOD LUCK!

Be mindful that a successful proposal is only the beginning – As soon as the rock is on your fiancée’s finger, the wedding plans will start getting overwhelming. Although the stress may get to you, remember the goal of celebrating, which is the union of you and your significant other. Be excited!
