5 Savoury Pancake Spots In Klang Valley

5 Savoury Pancake Spots In Klang Valley

When it comes to pancakes, most of us are probably more accustomed to the sweet varieties. This includes everything from mixed berries to honey, ice cream and the quintessential ingredient, maple syrup. While pancakes are mainly served as breakfast or dessert, you can have them as a main meal as well, an alternative to the usual entrée (e.g. rice, noodles, burgers, just to name a few) in the form of savoury pancakes. So, if you are looking to sample some of them, check out these 5 Savoury Pancake Spots in Klang Valley!

1) Yellow Brick Road

Operating since 2015, Yellow Brick Road is still going strong, as evidently seen during my recent visit a few weeks ago. The cafe is almost packed to the brim during the lunch hour at the time. Their menu consists of plenty of comfort food options here, namely gourmet burgers, pasta and assorted rice bowls.

But I’m more interested in their pancake selections from Wicked Pancake Parlour, offering savoury and sweet varieties. Let’s talk about the former, where I tried the Much Room For Mushrooms. I have to say the large, folded pancake complements well with the juicy and creamy assorted mushrooms. The added deep-fried portobello mushrooms, coupled with bacon bits, grilled cheese as well as a handful of aromatic curry leaves and truffle oil made this a fulfilling meal.

Other savoury options include the Chickity Salted Egg Pancake (pancake with popcorn chicken & spicy salted egg sauce) and their Pancake Tacos such as Pulled Beef, Tempura Unagi and Chicken Katsu.

2) Jam & Kaya Cafe

A quaint cafe located within the PJ Palms Sports Centre, Jam & Kaya Cafe is a popular spot for brunch dishes. They serve an all-day breakfast menu, covering from the Australian-style Big Breakfast to the classic Egg Benedict and Monte Cristo Sandwich. Their main highlight, of course, has to be their signature Farmer’s Pancake Breakfast. The pancake itself is made fresh from scratch on a daily basis. Each plate comes with hearty add-ons of chicken ham, hash brown, sauteed button mushroom and salad leaves drizzled with syrup. Topped with a perfect sunny-side-up egg, it’s a wholesome meal worth savouring.

Address: PJ Palms Sports Centre, 1, Lorong Sultan, Bandar Baru Petaling Jaya, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

3) Ra-Ft Cafe/Bistro

Looking at their menu, Ra-Ft offers breakfast staples from Big Breakfast a.k.a. Ra-Ft Breakfast to Eggs Benedict, French Toast and of course, Pancakes. The latter is limited to two sweet varieties (Original with Mixed Berries/Stuffed with Nutella) and a savoury option. Well, not really since it’s more of a combination of both. Served in three stacks of thick and fluffy pancakes, each of them is stuffed with bacon. If that’s not enough, they even topped the pancakes with a few slices of — well, what else — bacon. A drizzle of maple syrup, in the meantime, helps to balance the overall savoury taste with a subtle hint of sweetness. Ra-Ft has a few branches in KL and Selangor, namely Arcoris Plaza and Sierramas.

4) Red Kettle

Tired of the regular pancakes? Here is something different for a change, even though it’s actually nothing new. It’s called Dutch Baby Pancake and as you may already guess, it’s a delicacy that originated from the Netherlands. The main difference between the regular (American) pancakes and the Dutch variety is that the latter is typically thinner and larger. For Red Kettle’s version, they serve them (Red Kettle Dutch Baby) with wholesome add-ons of homemade pork sausage, sauteed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, salad and grilled bread. It comes with a choice of eggs, where you have them scrambled, poached, over easy or sunny-side up. And for a fraction of the price, you can choose to add on smoked French ham and/or mushrooms too.

Address: F130, 1st Floor, The Starling Mall, 6, Jalan SS 21/37, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

5) Tray Cafe

Here’s another cafe where you can taste a Dutch pancake. Located at Plaza Damas, Tray Cafe serves the aforementioned pancake as part of its all-day breakfast menu. Serve in an Instagram-worthy cast-iron pan, the large and eggy Dutch-style pancake comes with assorted savoury toppings. This includes smoked salmon, sliced avocado and a sunny-side-up egg.

Address: H-0-2 Block H, Plaza Damas, 60, Jalan Sri Hartamas 1, 50480 Kuala Lumpur.
