“New year, new me!” Have you set any goals or made any resolutions to take on 2018? If you haven’t (or even if you have), these guidelines may help you in making 2018 a better year! Instead of focusing on external goals such as “earn more money” or “lose some weight”, these guidelines are directed internally, helping you change your life from the inside out. To a better year ahead!

1) Make Every Day a Thanksgiving Day

This seems like a no-brainer, but sometimes we tend to be more demanding rather than grateful for what we already have. Mentally go through what you can be grateful for every day if you’re not into writing it down; it works just as well if you make it a habit. There might be some days where you feel like you have nothing to be thankful for, but start small with things such as friends and family, or your health. Practice gratitude instead of resentment every day, and you’ll find yourself happier, because you’ll be complaining less!

2) Fear Not

There may be many things you’re afraid of in life, among them possibly the past, the future, and not being good enough. Some of us are running from our past, while some of us are constantly worried about the future. To quote Buddha, “The past is already gone, the future is yet to come. There’s only one moment for you to live, and that is the present moment.” There’s nothing you can do about the past, and you can’t control the future. The best thing to do is live the now with exuberance, and ask yourself this: why do you think about things you fear, especially when you don’t even want them to happen?

3) What’s Your Spotlight On?

By now, you probably already know that both good and bad things will happen in life, and try as you might, there’s no avoiding the bad stuff. What you can do is choose and direct your energy and focus towards the positive things rather than the negative, and over time, looking on the bright side of things will become second nature to you. Just like light, your focus is an energy source, and the more energy you spend on the positive things in your life, the more they will grow. Feed the positivity in your life by shining your light on it!

4) Create Happiness

Happiness comes in many forms, in mostly external or material things that “make” you happy temporarily. However, everlasting happiness doesn’t found externally, but created internally, by training yourself to maintain an “open heart” no matter the circumstances. Many things will happen from the beginning till the end of the day, and some of them will trigger a reaction from you. How many of those incidents do you want to let affect you? Remember that you have the power to choose your own response, and sometimes all it takes to be happy is a conscious decision to be so.

5) Enjoy the Perks of Living

As humans, we’re only on earth for a limited amount of time, then we have to leave. We just don’t know how much or how little time we have. With the limited time you have, do you know what you are doing with your life? Are you happy with what you’re doing with it? Or are you constantly unhappy with one thing or another? How much more do you want to ask for? Look around you and realise that everything around you is a gift, a blessing. Be excited about being alive because the world is your oyster – if you’re alive, you can do anything. It’s time to get the party started; enjoy living before expiring!
