12 New Skills You Can Pick Up Just By Watching YouTube Tutorials

Hello and welcome to Day 6 of Malaysia’s Movement Restriction Period. During this time, we kindly ask that you remain in your residences and not head out unnecessarily. For your entertainment, we have collected 12 new skills that you can learn right at home, just by watching YouTube tutorials. We promise they’re a mixture of fun and practicality! Now sit back, open up YouTube, and enjoy the comfort of your home!

1) Folding Clothes

Well, not just folding them, but folding them to maximise space usage. If you’re bored out of your mind, it’s time to give your wardrobe/cupboard/drawer a makeover. Your whole family’s as well, if it comes to that. It’s actually a pretty good way to pass time.

2) Cartwheels

A cartwheel doesn’t require that much space, so you should be able to do it at home. Your living room, probably? After sitting around all day, it’s a good idea to get moving! If you don’t know how to cartwheel, this is for you. If you’ve already mastered the art of cartwheeling, you could always move on to more challenging moves!

3) Drawing/Painting

Folding clothes and cartwheels not your thing? Perhaps something relaxing and therapeutic like drawing or painting would do the trick. There are probably a tonne of art-related tutorials on YouTube, ranging from basic to advanced with a variety of art supplies and equipment. See what you have at home, and search up a related tutorial. We like this one though, because it’s basic and you only need a pencil.

4) Meditate

You’ve heard the benefits and wonders of it. Maybe you didn’t believe it in. Maybe you tried it but didn’t get the hang of it. Well, now you have some time, so why not give it a go (again)? Meditation could take minutes up to hours depending on your preference, so this could easily become a daily routine if you find your rhythm during this time.

5) Juggling

Wonder how people manage to juggle up to what seems like tens of objects in only two hands? Well, you’re about to find out! While it’s probably not a useful skill in the traditional sense, you can’t deny that this is a cool skill nevertheless! Plus, you could juggle just about anything, even balls made of paper if you have no suitable objects, though actually balls for juggling would be best.

6) Basic CPR

CPR is literally a lifesaving technique, but how many of you actually know how to perform it? You never know when CPR is needed, but it’s definitely handy to learn just in case of emergencies. Also, remember to call 999 for professional help and backup when situations arise.

7) Learn A New Language

Okay, so maybe you won’t be that fluent, but at least you’ll have the basics covered. By selecting your preferred language, simply look up tutorials that are most appealing to you. We picked this basic learn Italian in 30 minutes video, and half the reason is because we found the comments amusing, so there’s another thing for you to do.

8) Make A Bed Properly

You ever wondered why hotel beds are just so cosy and inviting? There’s a technique and steps to follow, and you can learn it too! After this you too can master the art of bed-making. You don’t have to use every single thing they use, but with what you have for now.

9) Beatboxing

It’s fascinating when one can actually create and imitate other sounds with their mouths, and we absolutely cannot do that. Check this out and let us know if you’ve had any luck with success, or you too, spat at the screen like it wronged you personally.

10) Calligraphy

This has become a trending hobby in recent times, and we can totally see why. Not only is it pretty to look at, but the process of creating the strokes is also calming. You don’t really need fancy supplies unless you already have them. This video is calligraphy produced with school supplies, and you might just have them right at home!

11) Coding

Coding is actually an important and valuable skill set in the 21st century, and it never hurts to pick up some basic coding. The jumble of letters and numbers look like a hard pill to swallow, but we hope this clears things up a little to get you started!

12) Self-Defense

It doesn’t hurt to learn a move or two you can use in case you get attacked. In this video it says “for women”, but we think men can learn these as well, definitely. Maybe you could even partner up and practice, but don’t hit using your full strength – you don’t need a trip to the hospital. For better practice and understanding, sign up for classes instead!
