The Lepak Game – Can a Game Change a Country for the Better?

For any country on the road to becoming a developed nation growing pains are inevitable. For some, the current events in Malaysia constitute a perfect storm. They hold on white knuckled unsure of where circumstances might take them. In uncertain times like this it is natural to seek safety and withdraw to what is familiar. However, fear and avoidance are not the way forward. The way forward is to stand together as Malaysians in the face of difficulty.

According to the Star’s Moderation survey conducted in 2015, standing together as Malaysians is posing a challenge. 73% think that the state of ethnic relations is declining; 75% think Malaysia is becoming less moderate. The good news is most Malaysians (69%) see themselves as Malaysians first. Minister in PM Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup says “I believe this stand – of seeing oneself as Malaysian first – should be promoted as a way forward to foster greater unity and to heal tensions. Seeing ourselves as Malaysians first is not a betrayal of our ethnicity or religion. Being Malaysian is our collective identity,”

So how do we encourage this collective identity? We celebrate Malaysian-ness. We intentionally choose to emphasise our shared experience, language and humour, recognizing that all races make significant contributions to the whole. The way forward is more fun than you might have thought.
