While meal and cuisine choices are aplenty, sometimes the best food is the most simple, and all we crave is a meal of home-cooked food. That’s where The Cabin 寒舍 comes in, offering simple yet heartwarming meals, all prepared by mothers of different backgrounds and Chinese subgroups. Whichever dishes you choose to have, they are sure to remind you of the taste of home.

About The Cabin 寒舍

Believe it or not, The Cabin 寒舍 was actually just founded on 5th August 2020 as an alternative way to survive the COVID-19 outbreak. The founders Amanda Chua and Tan Phuay Kee alongside Tan’s wife Angeline Ang are all from the travel industry, but as the pandemic crippled the travel industry, they decided to try their hand at F&B, which is something completely new to them. It took lots of determination, courage, confidence and faith, but they did it anyway. All in all, The Cabin 寒舍 simply means home, and the cafe’s concept is fusing home and travel into one. They believe that the most comfortable place on earth is “home”, yet travel has become an essential in today’s world. With The Cabin 寒舍, they invite customers to dine in, feeling at home while sharing their travel experiences.

The Taste Of Home

Operating six days a week from Monday to Saturday from 7:30am to 3pm, The Cabin 寒舍 provides both breakfast and lunch. Their breakfast menu includes Teochew Porridge, Laksa, Mushroom Minced Pork Noodles, Mantou with Egg Mayo, Vegetarian Burger, and Sardine Bee Hoon just to name a few. On the other hand, their lunch highlight is the “mama set lunch”, which includes a portion of fragrant rice, a main dish of your choice, a soup, a vegetable dish, two condiments, and a dessert. What’s so special about the “mama set lunch” is that the meals are all prepared by mothers, who belong to different Chinese subgroups and feature different styles of cooking. As such, they don’t have a specific lunch menu, since the cook differs from day to day, and The Cabin 寒舍 has also given total freedom to the assigned mother to decide what they want to cook. This gives the mother a greater sense of enjoyment, and is also a good opportunity for these moms to earn some side income as we all battle the pandemic.

“What To Eat For Lunch?” Solved

Besides the fact of the looming pandemic, another contributing factor that led to the launch of The Cabin 寒舍 was the founders’ own problem of deciding what to eat for lunch. With limited time and indecision, they usually just ate the same food at the same place most of the time. Therefore, they came up with the “mama set lunch”, which is a complete meal, so customers need only choose one of out two main dish options, and enjoy a different lunch every day. Less hassle, satisfaction guaranteed, with a presentation that warms the heart! They are ecstatic with returning customers, as they are touched by certain food that they thought belonged to a bygone era, such as the Teacher Style Sweet Porridge.
