A quick glance at Sarla Devi Nadarajan’s intricate handmade jewelry is all it really takes to conclude that she is both talented and passionate about what she does. Sarla is the founder of SARLAZ Artistic Fashion Accessories, and prides herself upon creating wearable works of art for her customers.

Professionally trained in Graphic Design and Fashion Design, Sarla has been drawn to creative pursuits since childhood. In 2009, the creative spark was lit even more when she made her first design, for a photo-shoot she was working on. From there, she delved into more designs, and in February 2015, her business officially kick-started. While she still maintains a job as a Graphic Designer, she also sets aside time to create jewelry at her home studio.

Sarla realized that she had to carve a niche for herself to market her designs and came up with the idea to craft jewelry that can be worn in two ways (as pictured above), creating two distinct looks on one piece. This concept was a hit, and sold within 17 minutes after she posted a photo on Facebook. Despite that, Sarla knew that her designs had to be unique and not to mass-produce the same item. She focused on making her jewelry exclusive and intricate, taking anywhere from a week to a month to complete a design. As such, her customers are assured one-of-a-kind products made from polymer clay, braided cord, fabric, with personalised messages.

A committed “artepreneur”, Sarla is involved in every step of the business process, in addition to the creative aspects of her work.

“I do all design work, item production, photography, graphic design, packing, shipping and customer service. I make each piece completely from scratch.” she said, adding that she also makes an effort to learn more about the technical aspects of running a business.

Ultimately, she hopes to instill a sense of fun where her jewelry is concerned, so that people who wear her items are able to express themselves creatively while boosting their confidence.

“My creations are whimsical, personified and adds vividness to one’s expression. It is designed to celebrate and inspire, an artistic expression that people will enjoy by expressing their individuality about how they feel through what they wear.” she explained.

Taking inspiration from animals, nature and art, her notable creations include The Ocean Series – which features a polymer clay octopus, mermaids, braided cord jellyfish. Some of Sarla’s creations are used to create awareness on Ovarian Cancer. She feels that her creations would make meaningful gifts, as they are statement-making pieces.

Sarla sells her products via her Facebook page, and though it was difficult to generate traffic to her page in the earlier stage, she has now built a strong presence for herself online. She is now keen to expand her online presence from Facebook to other platforms like Etsy.

The sky is the limit for Sarla, who has great aspirations for her designs and wish to widen her scope to penetrate markets both locally and internationally. So far, she has already been invited to showcase her jewelry in the United States. Beyond this, she would also like to own her own showroom, see her work displayed and sold in the world’s renowned galleries, and perhaps someday even organise a jewelry fashion show.
