About Nyonya Licious Kitchen

Run by husband-and-wife team Ben and Debbie, Nyonya Licious Kitchen is a simple establishment providing authentic Baba Nyonya food using recipes passed down from Debbie’s late mother, Madam Low Sah Neo. Debbie’s parents used to sell Nasi Lemak, Nyonya Laksa and Mee Rebus, as well as traditional Nyonya cakes like Apam Balik, Kuih Koci and Gading-Galo. Both Debbie’s parents were Baba Nyonya from traditional Baba Nyonya villages in Malacca, ensuring that all food at Nyonya Licious Kitchen is authentic, homemade and traditional. First launched in 2015, Nyonya Licious Kitchen turns five in 2020!

A Family Legacy Tied Together With Nyonya Food

Ben and Debbie were in the event management business prior to this, and Madam Low urged them to travel less as their sons were growing up. Ben would help Madam Low in the kitchen for large-scale cooking, and Madam Low saw his talent for cooking. She then suggested that they start a Baba Nyonya food outlet. They managed to acquire a shop, renovating and planning to open it at the right time. Unfortunately, Madam Low passed on mere days before the opening. Regardless, they persevered, and today they have several signature dishes, including Nasi Lemak Kukus, Nyonya Laksa, Mee Rebus and Homemade Nyonya Cendol. In short, Nyonya Licious Kitchen is Madam Low’s legacy; enabling everyone to savour the best Baba Nyonya food in Malacca.

Made From Scratch

Till today, Ben is at the market at 4am in the morning to get fresh ingredients, ranging from fish to other “kampung” materials. They believe that using fresh and “kampung” ingredients is one of the reasons their food retains a very authentic taste. Besides the aforementioned signature dishes, some of their other noteworthy dishes also include Ikan Cili Garam, Sambal Udang Petai, Mee Rebus, Ayam Goreng Berempah and Ayam Rempah Buah Keras. Many customers ask about purchasing their sambal, but currently they are not producing sambal for sale. Their cendol is special as well, which consists of two different pandas leaves and several trial and errors on Ben’s part to achieve the right taste, texture and solidity. Just a note: if you’re looking for their Mee Rebus, it is only available on the weekends at the moment.

Expanding Nyonya Licious Kitchen

Somewhere down the road, Nyonya Licious Kitchen hopes to expand their business, by setting foot in the Malacca town itself or a mall, KL, Johor and even Singapore. Some people have looked them up for a franchise, but they are looking to be more stable before venturing into business on a larger scale. For now, maintaining their food quality and ensuring customers’ satisfaction remain their top priority. Rebecca Saw featured them in the MAS magazine 2017, which stated that their Nyonya Cendol is the best in Malacca. Other Baba Nyonya have also complimented them, saying that their food is just like their grandmother’s, aunt’s or mother’s, which is a huge compliment for them. On top of Nyonya food (mains), there’s also some Nyonya kueh available, namely Nyonya Kueh Tair, pineapple tarts, Apam Balik, Apam Berkuah and Nyonya Kaya.
