Lombok is an Indonesian Island east of Bali and west of Sumbawa. Even though it is less famous than it’s neighbor, Bali, it is well known for it’s beautiful beaches.
1) Mount Rinjani
Mount Rinjani rises at 3,726 metres which made it the second highest volcano in Indonesia. It is one of the highlights if you ever come to Lombok. You can book multi-day guided tour to the place in advance or you can hire a “supir” (driver) to get you there and hire a guide when you reach the area. There are plenty of guide services around the area.
Senggigi is one of the most popular surf spots for local and tourists. The whole area is well known for its beautiful west facing beaches. Many visitors dropped by at Senggigi as a home base to take a day trip to the waterfalls or to just explore the authentic village. Senggigi is about 15 to 20 minutes north of the outskirts of the island’s capital, Mataram. You can take taxi from the airport to reach here. Or, you can hire a “supir” (driver in advance to take you here.
3) Baun Pusuk (Monkey Forest)
You can take a winding road through the breathtaking mountain landscape to get to Bangsal. This is where you can find the so called Baun Pusuk (Monkey forest). According to the local, it is named after the numerous wild monkeys in the jungle and on the street. Baun Pusuk is actually a nature conservation situated in West Lombok residence near the popular trekking destination, Mount Rinjani. This area is full of the monkeys feeding their kids or standing by the road and even seating at the bridge just like human watching people and cars that are passing by.
Kuta offers beautiful beaches as well as plenty of accommodations and restaurants ranging from backpacker offerings to a four star resort. It is a coastal town in the south of the island of Lombok. The scenery is spectacular with cliffs and mountains and jaw dropping landscapes and views. Many visitors in Kuta are surfers as it has some of the best surfing in the world. You can take taxi from the airport or hotel transfer to reach Kuta.
5) Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls
At these waterfalls, you can enjoy layered waterfalls, cool air and green scenery. These waterfalls are located at the foot of Mount Rinjani. These waterfalls form water stairs in single flow. You will feel so fresh with the blowing mist that feels the surround valley. You have to buy entrance ticket to enjoy these waterfalls. Make sure you only pay at the entrance of the waterfall next to a sign that stated amount to pay of r.p 10,000. Do not pay anywhere else as you may be taken advantage of and asked to pay at a very high price. Speaking from experience.
6) Gili Islands
Gili Islands consist of Gili Trawangan (the main island), Gili Meno and Gili Air. These 3 paradise islands can be reached by boat. The islands are popular for scuba diving and snorkeling. However, it is also suitable for relaxing, swimming and partying! This is a MUST place to visit if you are ever in Lombok.
7) Sade Traditional Sasak Village
Sade Village is a traditional village located at Central Lombok. You can take taxi to visit this village. It will take you about 1 hour from the Mataram city or about 30 minutes from the airport. The village still has traditional houses in which the roof is made from alang-alang and the wall is made from combination of clay and cow faeces. Traditionally, the man in the sade village will sleep outside of the house. The reason being is to protect the daughter from being kidnapped. Mataram is situated at the western side of Lombok. It is also known as the soul of Lombok. Mataram serve as the provincial capital. It is the perfect staging point before you explore the splendors of Lombok. You can also visit the Mataram Mall with its numerous shops, bars and restaurants within it. You will also find places like Cakranegara and Ampenan nearby where you can see some old dutch colonial buildings.
