Burgers — street/roadside or gourmet — are the ultimate comfort food. Forget about counting calories (moderation is always the key anyway) since we are talking about buns with meat patties (typically beef) and sinful ingredients like cheddar cheese and streaky bacon. Below are the Top 10 Burger Places in KL & Selangor, covering halal/Muslim-friendly and non-halal burger spots.

1) Woodfire KL

From its humble beginnings in 2017 to a full-fledged establishment, the Johor-based Woodfire has expanded its presence across different states. This includes KL, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and even Indonesia. Their secret of success? Big, mean and juicy gourmet burgers. Woodfire’s top-of-the-line Brisket Burger deserved a mention here: a burger haven of beef patty with streaky beef bacon slices and smoked beef brisket. The burger is also layered with cheese, onions, pickles and smoky-sweet BBQ sauce. Even their “basic” varieties, namely the BBQ Burger Beef is no slouch either. Not into beef burgers? Woodfire offers chicken versions too such as Gourmet Burger Chicken and Stuff Cheese Burger Chicken.

2) Burger on 16

Tucked behind Berjaya Times Square, there’s a backstreet that lined a row of shops and other establishments. That same street also housed Burger on 16, where they offer over 20 gourmet burgers to choose from. Can’t make a pick? Do try their unique California Cheese Skirt — a juicy beef burger that goes “ballerina” with a giant disc of griddled cheese skirt sandwiched between the buns. To top it off, you’ll get to taste different flavour profiles from the sweetness of caramelised onions to the crunchy fresh lettuce and robust cheddar cheese. But if you prefer more traditional, you can’t go wrong with their Mad Cheese. Burger on 16 served chicken burgers too, offering the likes of the spicy-licious Inferno Chicken and Teriyaki Outspread.

3) Sneaky Burgers

True to its name, patrons have to keep an eye on when they pass by a row of shops in Damansara Jaya. That’s because Sneaky Burgers is located on the second floor atop the electrical appliances store bearing the Panasonic signboard. You need to climb a flight of stairs next to it. Burger-wise, they specialise mainly in pork burgers. And yes, they made their pork patties in-house. Their basic Porky Classic Burger is a good start or opt for the one with the sweet grilled pineapple. For the ultimate indulgence, level up with the tall Sneaky Pig-Mac Burger. Think of it as a gourmet version of Big Mac but come with double pork patties instead. There’s a fried egg and all the usual add-ons to satisfy your craving.

4) Fowlboys

Fowlboys proved that beef burgers aren’t always the star of the show. And they do that by dedicating their burger joint to cluckin’-good chicken burgers. Let’s start with their OG Sandwich — a southern-style fried chicken thigh, pickles and their own Cluck sauce and Fowl jam served on a fluffy potato bun. Alternatively, go for their Motherclucker topped with a creamy slaw or the spicy Major Buffalo. You can find their outlets in SS15 Subang Jaya and Desa Sri Hartamas.

5) Brader John Burger

The famous Brader John Burger stall in Damansara Uptown needs no introduction. It has been around for over a decade and still going strong. And it’s easy to see why: his array of saucy street burgers from the classic beef/chicken to Special Cheese and Master Burger are as sloppy as they should be. The latter refers to the combination of double patties with double cheese wrapped in a fried egg. Brader John Burger opens from 8 pm till 2 am (past midnight, that is), making it ideal for those who are craving a sinfully good supper.

myBurgerLab, which pioneered the gourmet burger craze back in the 2010s, is still doing good. And even with all the stiff competition, they continue to strive with 7 outlets to date across Klang Valley. Their success lies in the honest-to-goodness approach. That means no shortcuts in making their gourmet burgers. This includes homemade beef patties and charcoal buns, which are baked from scratch. Some of their must-tries include Beautiful Mess and the nutty-berry Jammin With Elvis. They also serve chicken burgers using fried chicken thighs and meatless varieties, where they substitute beef/chicken patties with fried whole portobello mushrooms.

Spade’s Burger got its start in Penang when they used to operate a burger stand. Today, they have several outlets nationwide including the Klang Valley areas. They only use high-quality ingredients that are sourced locally. Each burger is freshly made upon order, offering different varieties like Spades (beef patty with pork bacon) and Dark Knight (beef patty with parmesan brittle & bacon onion jam). If you prefer chicken, they have Chickanizer and Buttermilk Phynix, both of which are sandwiched with fried chicken thighs.

The SS17 Subang Jaya houses Seventythirty.kl, a popular burger stall situated just across the Petron station. They aren’t your average street burger style since they use homemade Australian beef patties with no fillers or preservatives whatsoever. Two of their best sellers — Say Cheese! Burger and The Prettiest Star — are to die for. For the latter, they topped their beef patty with cheese, sunny-side-up egg and streaky beef bacon. Those who prefer chicken burgers can look forward to KFC Burger, serving a Korean fried chicken style layered with cheese and spicy-salty gochujang sauce.

9) TPCB – The Permanent Choice Burger

What started as a pop-up has since become a permanent establishment. And this pretty much explained the name of their burger outlet in Shah Alam. The Permanent Choice Burger or simply TPCB does their burgers using homemade beef patties. Try their bestselling TPCheese Burger, covering a smashed beef patty with cheddar cheese and all the usual suspects. The Dirty Bulk comes highly recommended too — a protein-packed goodness of smashed beef patty with cheddar cheese, smoked streaky and sunny-side-up egg. TPCB isn’t just about beef as they also offer chicken burgers using deep-fried marinated buttermilk chicken thighs.

Smash burgers are what Local Area Burger is good at. Succulent balls of minced beef are all skillfully pressed down with a spatula, giving them a nice sear. Local Area Burger stays true to the smash burger tradition. That means nothing fancy since they only offer the basics (single or double). Or if you prefer some sweetness in your smash burger, go for the one with caramelised onions. You can locate their burger stall at Lorong Rahim Kajai 14 in TTDI near Maybank.
