Pokestops, Eggs, Gyms, Incense and Lure. If any of these terms sound alien to you, chances are, you haven’t come on board the latest worldwide craze called “Pokémon Go”. The Game debuted in Malaysia on 5th August 2016 and since then, one can witness hundreds and thousands of people glued to their smartphones in the quest to of “catch em all”. With the craze growing by the minute, let’s take a look at why the game is such a global phenomenal.


1) It’s Good For You (Health Wise)

Unlike console-based games, Pokémon Go is a game that forces you to walk a lot! If you wish to go far in this game, you need to walk the distance. In the game, when you get a Pokémon egg, you can place it in an incubator to wait for it to hatch. But the time it takes to hatch is entirely up to you. The first eggs you get require you to walk 2 km or 5 km for incubation to complete. Best part is you can’t cheat your way by driving the distance. On top of walking, players also reap the other benefits of walking such as getting some fresh air and sunlight. This is surely a game that comes with a thumb of approval from your neighborhood doctor.

2) It’s Free

The app can be downloaded for free. Regardless if you are on a tight budget, want to try it out for curiosity or just being stingy, this is one game that you don’t need to break the bank to enjoy it.

3) Exploring the Real World

As a child, we grew up wanting to explore the world. Now, we have the perfect opportunity. In order to “catch em all”, one needs to explore the surrounding neighborhoods, towns, states and even countries. Although it’s just a game, but millions of people are already starting to explore their surroundings with the hope of catching a rare Pokémon or just to discover new things to do.

On more than one occasion, we find it difficult to talk to the person next to us as we may not have a common interest or don’t know how to start the conversation. With Pokémon Go, you can be certain that the guy next to you who is staring into his smartphones is trying to catch a Pokémon. This makes it the perfect occasion to start a conversation around Pokémon Go and start comparing your stats. With a huge majority of people into this game, meeting like-minded people wouldn’t be a problem.

5) You are Riding the Wave of the Future

Pokémon Go is based on augmented reality, i.e. it’s all about the real world. The app uses your smartphone’s camera to overlay the digital creatures on your screen. This means that as a user, you may be riding the wave of the future. Console-based games may become a thing of the past and 30 years from now, you can proudly tell your kids or grandkids that you were one of the first few user of this augmented-reality games!

One possible reason why Pokémon Go is such a hit could be because it allows people to have a hobby and goal. With the quest of catching all the Pokémons, it’s immediately provides a sense of purpose for the players. Combined with a healthy dose of exercise, this may be one cool hobby that is actually good for you!
