Cool Down with Shaved Ice/Gula Apong Ice Cream At These 6 Dessert Places in Seri Kembangan

Mention the word “Seri Kembangan”, and The Mines Shopping Mall might be the first thing that quickly comes to mind. But the truth is, this township is also home to plenty of good food and dessert. The latter is where we want to focus on, specifically shaved ice and gula apong ice cream. We have rounded up a selected list of 6 dessert places that you can locate in Seri Kembangan!

1) 939 冰坊

At first glance, it’s easy to dismiss 939 冰坊 a.k.a. 939 ABC Ice House as another regular mom-and-pop dessert shop. A kind of a small and humble place with no air-conditioning or fancy decor whatsoever. It opens as early as 11 am and having visited the shop recently, I found most people prefer takeaways rather than dining-in (there were only two seatings at the time).

Their speciality lies in the varieties of shaved ice, covering from their signature ABC to others like Red Bean Ice, Dragon Fruit Ice and Mix Fruits Sago. I have tried some of them, beginning with their ABC — a colourful treasure of assorted agar-agar (jelly cubes), cendol, sweet corns, grass jelly, red beans and peanuts blanketed the sweetened shaved ice. It only cost less than RM10 for a large bowl and I have to say they are definitely generous with all the toppings. Not to mention it tastes just right and not too sweet.

2) Grandmom Dessert

Here’s a family-owned dessert shop that prides itself in freshly-prepared handmade ingredients with no artificial flavours, colouring or preservatives of any kind. Just honest-to-goodness refreshing shaved ice desserts, offering familiar favourites like Soya Ice and Grass Jelly Ice. They also sell traditional desserts such as tau fu fa (soybean pudding) and red bean soup.

3) Guochao Dessert

Can’t get enough of shaved ice? Here’s another for you at Kampung Baru Seri Kembangan called Guochao Dessert. Their dessert shop boasts a contemporary industrial-style interior using repurposed shipping containers, looking all bright and spacious. Dessert-wise, do try their cooling Signature Soya Ice with Taro Balls, which is available in either regular or deluxe size. Other delicious shaved ice options worth considering include Signature Cendol Ice with Taro Balls and Mango Deluxe. Do note that Guochao Dessert occupies the second floor while there’s a car wash located downstairs.

4) SoYoung Malaysia

If you love all things soymilk, SoYoung is worth checking out, where they use only quality non-GMO Canadian soybeans with no additives or preservatives. And yes, you don’t even have to worry if you are lactose intolerant since their soymilk happens to be gut-friendly too. Soymilk aside, they also sell related desserts like tau fu fa and of course, shaved ice. The latter is more of a Japanese bingsu-style (Snowy Shirayuki), offering soymilk shaved ice served with three toppings of your choice (e.g. adzuki red bean, brown sugar mochi and roasted black sesame). The soymilk shaved ice itself gives a smooth and refreshing mouthfeel, which pairs well with the bite-sized toppings.

5) M Ice Cream

This local ice cream chain is renowned for its unique gula apong (nipa palm sugar) ice cream. They have a few outlets throughout Peninsular Malaysia, covering the likes of KL and Selangor to other states such as Melaka, Johor and Terengganu. Last July, they opened their 12th outlet in Seri Kembangan, which is strategically located in Taman Equine (around 10 minutes of walk from the nearby Aeon Mall). First-timers might want to go for their original Gula Apong Sarawak, served in a soft-serve ice cream style with two free toppings of your choice (e.g. chocolate, cornflakes). Prices are reasonable too, offering three different sizes including small, medium or large.

6) Mokti’s Puncak Jalil

Mokti’s is another popular ice cream brand that specialises in gula apong ice cream. And yes, you can locate one of their outlets in Taman Puncak Jalil. Expect a smooth-tasting, soft-serve ice cream type flavoured with the subtle sweetness of gula apong. It’s cool and refreshing and if that’s not enough, you can enjoy not one but two free toppings. Among the toppings available includes chocolate rice, Nestum and groundnuts. Their menu is also extended to popsicles and ice cream tubs.
