If you are coming from KL, it’s an approximately 162-kilometre drive that would take around two hours or more to reach Teluk Intan. While (most) travellers would prefer going to Ipoh, why not stop by Teluk Intan for a change? It may have been not as popular as Ipoh but this town has a charm of its own with plenty of tourist attractions and good local foods to enjoy. That being said, here are the 8 things to do when visiting Teluk Intan.

1) Stop by at Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan

Can’t travel to Italy to visit the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa due to budget constraints? Here’s the next best and not to mention, cheaper alternative: the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan or Menara Condong Teluk Intan. Both a major tourist attraction and a landmark located in the centre of the town, this tilted 25-metre structure was originally built as a water tower back in 1885. Today, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan is served as a clock tower, where visitors can enter the building via a wooden spiral staircase. You can enjoy the panoramic view of the Teluk Intan townscape. Do note there’s an entrance fee of RM2 at the time of writing. And don’t forget to take some photos from the outside.

2) Visit the Lower Perak War Memorial (Batu Tenggek)

Another must-visit attraction to visit would be the Lower Perak War Memorial or commonly known as Batu Tenggek. The latter is named as such because of the granite rock perched atop the pedestal with an inscription below that reads: “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” That passage was extracted from Laurence Binyon’s famous poem called “For the Fallen”. Central Perak Planters Association (Persatuan Peladang Perak Tengah) first initiated the construction of this monument in 1917 to commemorate the lost lives between 1914-1918 during World War I and later, 1939-1945 after World War II.

8) Quench Your Thirst at Gerai Ais Bandung Tarik Abdul Malek Maju

You heard it right: Ais or Air Bandung Tarik. It may have been a familiar milky rose syrup drink in its distinct pink colour. But what makes this stall special is the way they serve the beverage. And that is using a modified stainless steel pot and a special pump to “pull” out the air bandung and into each cup filled with ice. Interestingly, they use a combination of coconut milk and Gula Melaka, giving it a uniquely sweet flavour instead of the usual condensed or evaporated milk typically associated with air bandung. They also sell cendol and coconut water.
