8 Types of Difficult Co-Workers at the Workplace

Taxes, death and difficult co-workers. These are among the certainties in life. In every workplace, you will have difficult coworkers. Difficult co-workers can come in the form of bosses, colleagues, customers and even your suppliers. Hence, it’s best to familiarize oneself with the different types of difficult co-workers.


1) The Tank

The Tank can be spotted through behaviors such as pushy, loud and forceful. Their motto is “If you are in the way, you will be crushed”.  The Tank needs to be approached with caution as resistance is futile.

2) The Sharp Shooter

Be prepared! The Sharp Shooter is a co-worker that will shoot you with no mercy. However, instead of shooting with rage, The Sharp Shooter will identify your weaknesses and use that against you. Expect to hear stories of being sabotaged or your reputation being hurt via the office grapevine.

3) The Bomb

This is a scary one! The Bomb explodes in bouts of anger. It can be a nice and quiet day in the office till The Bomb ticks off and sends everyone for cover. They are angry, mean and do not give consideration for the present circumstances.

4) The Brainy One

While we may think The Brainy One as a highly intelligent co-worker, this may not be entirely true. The Brainy One can either be full of answers, or just a “know-it-all”. Although these people may not know much, but they don’t let that get in the way. If The Brainy One does not know their facts, it may land you in trouble as it might jeopardize your project.

5) The Silent One

This is a tricky one. The Silent One is basically a person that says nothing. Be it in meetings, team discussion or one-to-one conversations, The Silent One doesn’t contribute to the conversation and are entirely disengaged from the situation. This may pose problems for others as you can’t tell what he or she is thinking.

6) The Crybaby

The Crybaby or also known as The Emotional One.  These people wallow in their difficulties and readily show emotions. The Crybaby always wants things their own way and everything you do is wrong. If they don’t get their way, The Crybaby will readily show their disappointments.

7) The Yes Man

As the name suggest, these people are quick to agree but rarely delivers. The Yes Man will commit to everything, but will not deliver. This can damage the reputation of other co-workers if important task or reports are due from The Yes Man in order for the others to complete their work.

8) The No Man

The No Man is the complete opposite of The Yes Man. The No Man will shoot down any ideas by saying it’s impossible to execute. They will find flaws and challenges in everything. The No Man rarely progresses in a company as they are not a team player.
