10 Movies You Have To Watch in 2017!

A new year means a whole new roster of movies to look forward to. From award-contenders to blockbusters and comedy films, this year promises something for everyone. Here’s Tallypress’s list of the movies you should definitely watch this year, and when* they will be released in local cinemas.

(*Note: Dates are subject to change).

1) The Lego Batman Movie

It seems that Batman will be appearing more than once in 2017. First up, as a rather yellow, block-like incarnation. Yes, even Batman is going Lego, and this will be something you can take your kids to watch, no dark themes or brooding heroes here – unless it’s played for laughs. Comedian Will Arnett voices this version of the Caped Crusader.

2) Kong: Skull Island

The last time we saw King Kong, he was hanging out with Naomi Watts and tolerating Adrien Brody. (Spoiler Alert: it didn’t end well.). This time, he’s got some MARVEL-lous new co-stars in the form of Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston – all of whom have superhero interactions in their vast job descriptions, so one giant ape shouldn’t be a problem, right? Think again, because Kong is King.

3) Beauty and the Beast

For 90s kids, the quintessential “tale as old as time” was Disney’s 1991 classic of the same name, but as we know, everything is getting a remake these days. With a cast-list that is impressive and diverse, featuring stars like Emma Watson, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen and many others, it will be fun to see how they breathe new life into this live-action version.

 4) Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

With all the clean-cut heroes, it’s nice to have some anti-heroes who are not as politically correct, yet fun all the same. And if the first installment was any indication, we’re in for a killer soundtrack, some hilarious lines uttered by leading man and designated goofball Chris Pratt and adorable Baby Groot scenes. There are also new characters in the mix, which should be interesting to watch.

5) Baywatch

This isn’t the Baywatch you remember, although the stars from the original TV series – David Hasslehoff and Pamela Anderson, will be making an appearance that will surely give you a dose of nostalgia. With names like Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Priyanka Chopra on the cast-list, this should be an interesting comedy to look out for, on days where superheroes just won’t cut it.

6) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

It’s been a long time since we last sailed the high seas with our Captain Jack Sparrow, but the beloved pirate and his rum will be making a comeback this year. It’s the fifth time around for this franchise, and in addition to Johnny Depp as the infamous Captain Jack, Orlando Bloom will return once again to reprise his role as Will Turner. Javier Bardem will also appear in a villainous role.

7) Wonder Woman

The boys need to take a seat, because Wonder Woman is here and she’s not messing around. Gorgeous Gal Gadot reprises the titular character, after an impressive debut appearance in last year’s Batman V Superman that many fans and critics felt stole the show (we called it!). Though reviews weren’t as kind to Batman and Superman, we’re rooting for Wonder Woman to take home box-office gold.

8) Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spiderman’s been pulling a Benjamin Button on us, he keeps getting younger and younger. So does Aunt May in fact, who’s played by Marisa Tomei in this film. Tom Holland will act as our favourite webbed one here, and he’s got friends in high places. Well, one friend, but who better than Ironman himself to be your mentor? We’ll see how the eensy weensy spider juggles his normal life with that of his new superhero duties.

 9) Justice League Part One

It’s a good year to be Wonder Woman really, she’ll be kicking butt alongside Ben Affleck’s Batman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg later this year too. After the trailer was released, fans have been clamouring for more teasers, which is a good sign. Only time will tell if this movie will help to propel the DC film universe to a higher level of praise.

10) Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi

The anticipation is at an all-time high, with the name of the 8th installment in this iconic series finally being announced. Fans are already taking to forums to dissect who “The Last Jedi” may be, even wondering if it refers to more than one character. Whatever it is, all questions will be answered come December. It will be bittersweet for most fans, as it will be the last official onscreen appearance of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, due to her shocking and untimely passing last year.
