Known for its stylish design and delicate workmanship, Harith Green Carpenter (HGC) turns construction wood waste and materials into solid furniture and creative functional pieces. TallyPress had the opportunity to speak to HGC and here’s all you need to know about this talented carpenter.
1) What is Harith Green Carpenter (HGC)?
HGC is a furniture brand that focuses on the upcycling of construction waste and materials into durable, stylish and functional pieces.
2) Who is the Green Carpenter?
Harith Ridzuan is a 30 year-old Malaysian furniture maker with over 10 years of experience in the local furniture manufacturing industry. After years of serving clients from the corporate and civil sectors, he decided to embark into a different spectrum of furniture-making. In recent years, he has helped to pioneer the construction of top trending local cafes such as Mukha, The Grumpy Cyclist, and Standing Theory.
3) Who is the team?
The brand is managed by Harith and his co-partner and wife, Aiqa Halim. Together, they work on creating a sustainable business that tackles environmental issues and contributes a positive impact to the eco-system.
4) Why “green” furniture?
Malaysia is currently experiencing a surge of construction and renovation works. As a result, tons of by-products are produced in the process. The country’s deforestation rates are also alarming. HGC upcycles construction waste into functional art pieces such as furniture, interior products, and deco items to ensure that less waste is being thrown away.
5) How will opting for recycled furniture help in the long run?
Our long-term goal is to reduce our dependency on new timber when creating new furniture and interior products. By upcycling waste, we can also help to reduce waste that continues to pile our landfills.
6) What style does HGC incorporate?
We experiment a lot with new ideas, designs, and materials. Innovation is the key to maintaining a competitive edge and we aim to provide our clients with unique and exclusive pieces.
7) What is your product range?
HGC offers custom-made furniture as well as other product ranges. This includes DAPO (serving tray, chopping board, food-grade wood stains and coating), ASAS (ready-made furniture), and IGNITE(electrical-themed furniture i.e. light fixtures, table lamps).
8) What is new for HGC?
To cater to the overwhelming demand for instant items, we recently launched our ready-made furniture range, ASAS, in conjunction with Ecobuild Southeast Asia 2015 and IGEM 2015.
9) How can the public know more about green carpentry?
HGC provides a Teaching Factory that entails woodworking classes, factory tours, eco-related talks, and a fabrication facility for practical students.
10) What is the HGC motto?
“Healing the world by making it beautiful”
