We spoke to Melissa from The Quirky Taste, to find out what makes their confections stand out from the crowd.
The Beginning of Everything
The idea for The Quirky Taste began two years ago, as an idea developed by Melissa and a former colleague. Melissa started her baking adventures before that, with loved ones enjoying her creations. Though she first began baking whilst studying abroad, she also turned to baking years later as a working girl, after tough days on the job. She started to experiment with flavours and recipes then, adapting them to suit her personal tastes.
Melissa continues to do this, as she saw that people appreciate a personal touch with baked goods, which inspired her to take her skills to the next level – making cakes with a homemade taste that look like art. Today, Melissa and her fiancé work hard to ensure the cakes reflect this idea.
About The Quirky Taste
Melissa intends for The Quirky Taste to be a top cakery in future, with a studio and a commercial space to host international cake artists too. More than this, they would also like to create awareness on the difference between commercialized cakes and bespoke cakes. There are many who dismiss the latter because of the higher cost, not realizing that premium ingredients and bespoke cakes go hand in hand. This is a challenge that they hope to overcome by educating clients on the importance of quality ingredients.
The Quirky Taste cakes are custom made to suit the client’s requirements – right down to the design, taste, and budget. They specialize in tiered cakes, and tend to cater for newly engaged couples and young adults who fall within the medium and higher income demographic. They can also make healthier versions of their cakes, perfect for those who need to mind their sugar intake.
The Journey
Naturally, running a business means life isn’t always sweet. Melissa has encountered her fair share of challenges, but she doesn’t let this affect her too much. She’s received feedback that her pricing is too high, but she stands firm in the knowledge that her clients will receive the best quality cakes that are delicious and gorgeous, for the price they pay.
Being a self-taught baker who attends classes to improve her cake-decorating skills, Melissa is proud to have created a 5-tier wedding cake for a client from scratch, as well as a unique 3-tier engagement cake in bold colours that inspired her to concentrate more on such projects. She assures that clients just have to let them know what they’d like as the end product. Brides/couples will enjoy free design sketching and consultation for wedding cakes too.

Melissa certainly believes in this saying, and takes it to heart. “Every cake is done as if it were for my wedding or birthday!”, she promises.
