Every single one of us have been guilty at some point, a cake stopping us in our tracks and turning our heads to snap an Instagram worthy shot, or to “Ooh” and “Ahh” at the beauty so intricately decorated. With each object or colour painstakingly shaped and painted with blood, sweat and tears, we almost feel the urge to hold our breath due to the fear that breathing too hard will destroy all that hard work. Brace yourself for more show-stopping craft, as we walk you through Buns In The Oven.

What is Buns In The Oven?

While buns in the oven is often colloquially used to mean pregnant with, Buns in The Oven (BITO) is run by a sugar artist based in KL Malaysia, specializing in fondant cake decorating and 3D jelly flower art. Apart from custom cake orders, she also travels to teach locally and internationally and conduct live demonstrations at cake shows and industry events. BITO orders are customized for the local market while her classes are available worldwide. As a freelance instructor, she travels to teach hands on classes and also provide online tutorials that students may learn from the comforts of their homes. Her style of work is often described as cute and colourful with lots of attention to detail. Due to the intricacy of BITO designs, she is often not able to take on big orders as it is not possible to produce them in a manner that will be efficient in terms of capacity nor the customer’s budget.

The Beginning of Buns In The Oven

BITO started dabbling in baking and cake decorating as a hobby in 2008. It wasn’t until 2012 that she left her day job and went full time as a cake decorator. Back then it was just a hobby but she was very passionate in experimenting new recipes and techniques which means there was a steady supply of sugary treats for her friends at work. Slowly, they started to place their orders and with all the projects that she was commissioned with, she figured that she should post them on FB. She created her Facebook Page; BunsInTheOven Cupcakery (or BITO for short) and it wasn’t long before she got more orders from the public.

The Team Who Made Buns In The Oven

BITO is managed solely by Sheryl; from the administrative side of things (enquiries, liaising with students, customers and suppliers, managing social media accounts) to the production end (baking, decorating, classes). However, she is happy to say that have had plenty of help from friends and family when things get a bit crazy. Her fiancé Sean, helps with the photography and things like a quick trip to the supply stores, delivery or cleaning up. They always joke that he’s the GM of the company.

The Unusual Bun

BITO’s unique selling point is her attention to detail be it on a custom order or a class content. She loves to see the reaction on people’s faces when they look at her creations. Sheryl thinks being able to bring a little bit of happiness and sparking a sense of wonder in people’s lives is such a privilege. Sheryl is very selfless when it comes to sharing knowledge and has even prepared two tutorials for anyone who is keen to give it a try. Here are the tutorials to make fondant Bunny Bear and Party Bear.

The Rising Bun

We live in such a fast paced world, Sheryl hopes she is still thriving in this industry in 5 years! “The cake industry is a wonderful place to be in. I have had opportunities to travel globally to teach, make appearances at cake shows and expos and get featured in international publications. 2015 was a pretty eventful year as I took home a couple of awards from a cake show in February in Manchester UK (a Gold ribbon for my competition entry and the Best In Show International title) and in November I was awarded the Cake Masters Magazine Cupcake Award. It is an incredible honour to be recognized by my peers and industry elders. You can view the portfolio that I submitted to the judges here.” Sheryl shares with TallyPress.

Apart from running ger own classes, she also hosts other cake instructors here in KL. Sheryl think it’s wonderful to be able to support talents in the industry; creating opportunities for both instructors and students to share their love in cake decorating.
